Enhance your running: increase stride rate to reduce injury risk

Understanding the importance of stride rate

For recreational runners, the stride rate, or the number of steps taken per minute, plays a crucial role in both performance and injury prevention. By increasing stride rate, runners can reduce the impact on their joints, particularly the knee and hip, leading to a decreased risk of running injuries.

Why increase stride rate?

Increasing stride rate by 5-10% above the preferred rate has been shown to significantly reduce energy absorption at the knee and hip joints. This reduction in mechanical load can help prevent common running-related injuries such as anterior knee pain and iliotibial band syndrome.

How to train your stride rate

  • Use a metronome or playlist: A metronome or music playlist (90bpm) can help maintain a consistent and increased stride rate during training.
  • Focus on shorter strides: Shortening your stride length naturally increases your stride rate, reducing the impact on your joints.
  • Monitor your progress: Track your stride rate via video-analysis or specific technology and adjust as necessary to ensure you're maintaining the optimal rate for injury prevention.

By incorporating these strategies, recreational runners can enhance their performance while minimizing the risk of injury. For personalized guidance, consider scheduling an appointment with our Sports Performance Specialists.
